I'm excited to share what Marci Klane, my partner in crime as an educator and artist, and I have been kicking up in our rodeo at Whoa Nelly Press, a small press we created to publish unheard voices and run writing programs for underserved youth and adults. We came up with the idea after I wrote "The Opposite of Hollywood" and decided that I wanted to not only have more control over the publication of my book, but also be able to use the proceeds to provide workshops for underserved writers whose voices Marci and I believe need to be heard. The creation of our press was also inspired by my nonprofit Write and Rise, fiscally sponsored by Intersection for the Arts, through which people who are incarcerated or targeted for incarceration have the opportunity to express their experiences in writing. Through my workshops with these writers and the publication of "Only the Dead Can Kill: Stories from Jail," generously funded by the Creative Work Fund, we witnessed what a powerful impact publishing their stories and poems had on the writers as well as the public, including families, communities, correctional and police officers, teachers, social workers, and readers in general. It inspired us to broaden this work to provide an arena for a wide variety of voices of unheard writers, including children and youth, to be expressed and heard. Please giddy on up to our corral and see what we have cooking!
Hope you can make it! All proceeds from sales of The Opposite of Hollywood, after costs, go towards writing programs and publications for underserved writers. Please check out Whoa Nelly Press!
